MINURSO celebrated today the International Day of Peacekeepers by organizing a ceremony at the Parade Ground of Mission Headquarters in Laayoune. The Special Representative and Head of Mission, Alexander Ivanko, chaired the ceremony, attended by many civilian and military staff. The Special Representative paid tribute to the nearly 4,200 heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives in the cause of peace, including more than a hundred since the last UN peacekeepers’ day alone, and underlined the enormous challenges faced by the 87,000 civilian, police and military personnel currently serving under the UN flag with bravery, dedication, and distinction in some of the world’s most challenging environments. The Special Representative deposed a wreath of flowers at the monument of the MINURSO peacekeepers fallen for the noble cause of peace.
